Saint Philomena, the Wonder-Worker, of whom little is really known, was a young Christian martyr of the third century. Her bones were discovered in 1802 in the Catacombs in Rome. They were covered with stones marked to indicate that she was a virgin martyr whose name was Philomena. The remains were those of a young girl, approx 13 years old. They were exhumed, catalouged and forgotten, since nothing else was known about her. A few years later, a canon working in the Treasury of Relics in the Vatican, was seized with powerful spiritual joy as he passed her relics. He requested that they be enshrined in a chapel. As soon as this was done, miracles began to be reported at the shrine, including curing of cancer and of wounds. Popular devotion to Philomena was spread in part by several saints of the 19th century who were devoted to her, including Saint John Neuman, St Francis Cabrini, and Saint John Vianney who called Philomena the "New Light of the Church Militant". He also said he "never asked for anything through the intercession of my little saint without having been answered." Though no records survive from Philomena's time, spiritual visions were granted to at least three persons who were each given details about her suffering and martyrdom. These details matched even though each person was unaware of the other's revelations. According to these visions, this little 13 year old girl was thrown into the Tiber river with an anchor around her neck, shot with arrows, and had her purity sorely tempted by the Emperor Diocletian himself and others. She resisted and remained pure and unscathed from all of these dangers, until finally Diocletian tired of the "sport" and had her beheaded. Philomena is considered the Patron of babies, infants and children, forgotten or lost causes, impossible causes, sick people, and the Living Rosary. She's a great role model for pre-teen or teenage girls. What a wonderful gift this would be for a young girl at her Confirmation - St Philomena is a wonderful role model for young women in today's secular, materialistic world, which is becoming so like the world in which the saint lived. This saint who lay forgotten, mourned by those who knew her 1700 years ago, cut down at the start of her life, who was "resurrected" at the beginning of the 19th century to begin her work of providing miracles to those of us suffering through the "modern ages". It has been said that young people need an example of heroic Christian purity, since they do not find support for purity from society, their friends, or even, sometimes, their parents. As a stunning contrast to young people today who are encouraged to pursue a life of ease and privelege, money and power, Philomena chose Christ and His Kingdom. Her heroics won many Christian converts, and she has a devoted following today. Please visit our Ebay Store Most items ship freeFree gift with fast payment! Check out our Clearance section!
