Description: Staffordshire Child Miniature Tea Trio ‘CLYDE,’ c 1861, Turner & Tomkinson Reference: 1) Lorraine Punchard, ‘Playtime Pottery & Porcelain From the United Kingdom and the United States,’ p 67. 2) Doris Lechler, ‘English Toy China,’ Figure # 56, pp 24, 134. 3) Transferware Collectors Club database. This is a miniature child’s Tea Trio transfer printed in Lavender on white earthenware in a pattern called ‘CLYDE,’ the Pattern Number is 5441. The design is of a ribbon bending around the body of all the pieces and with a reverse heart-shaped border which repeats on the handles and the inside of the creamer lip. Made by Turner & Tomkinson, 1860-1872, Tunstall, Staffordshire, with the Registration Date March 7, 1861 stamped on the bottom of all three pieces. Doris Lechler named this design ‘Rippled Ribbon Band,’ and attributed it to Godwin because of the shape and the feet; however, according to the Transferware Collectors Club database: “…It is noted on p. 186 in Godden Handbook 1999 that Turner & Tomkinson registered border patterns on that date. The Diamond Registry number is 52496.” This Tea Trio consists of: (1) Teapot with Lid: 5” W x 4.25” D. x 4.25” H Spoon ding to inside, two tone spots on the bottom.(1) Sugar with Lid: 4” W x 4” D x 3.75” H Chip/spoon ding to the inside, stable crack to one handle.(1) Creamer: 4” W x 3” D x 3” H Please excuse any white glare reflections in the photos. This fine antique Child's miniature Tea Trio is in excellent condition with the exceptions listed above. There may be some skips in the transfers and keep in mind these pieces were made for children to play with, but other than the exceptions described above, no other chips, cracks, or repairs. There may be sporadic stilt marks and the normal kiln imperfections consistent with production methods at the time of manufacture. I have described this to the best of my ability. If you are a collector of children’s china and wares, I would ask you to remember that these sets were made for and played with by children, and therefore, rarely in mint condition.
