Description: Victorian Childs Brown Aesthetic Transferware Creamer LITTLE GIRL WITH BIG DOG Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c. 1885 This miniature child's transferware creamer or milk jug, circa 1885, was originally part of a complete children's tea service. The little brown jug stands about 3-3/8 inches high. Bulbous round with a scalloped rim and applied handle, the decoration is transfer printed in a rich chocolate brown or sepia. It depicts a little girl, named Mae or May, standing with her arms around a huge dog (looks like a Newfoundland or brown lab). Little Mae is wearing a big hat and the dog appears to be smiling. This endearing scene is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers, birds and lots of geometrical whimsies, and a border of little fruit clusters, leaving very little white space. The pitcher is marked 'Staffordshire England. Associated with pattern number 766 and registration number 69456, registered by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets made for the American market. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The pattern is known as "Little May with Dog" or "Girl with Dog". The pitcher is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs. Childrens wares of this period were haphazardly made. The plate has a little smear here and there and other minor typical manufacturing imperfections , original to the making and adding to the quirky charm of these primitive wares. The plate displays beautifully, a great example of naive and whimsical early wares!Sold as is. Children's antique Aesthetic movement transferware in this fun pattern is highly sought after, and animal lovers and veterinary medicine folks love it! A perfect gift for the dog lover in your life! We have also listed companion plates depicting the same little girl sitting on a doorstep with her pets, and carrying an apronful of eggs on a country road, and other winsome transferware this week in a playful assortment of colors and shapes.
