Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph STATUE OF ROMAN EMPEROR GAIUS VIBIUS VOLUSIANUS (who ruled for the period 251-253) Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Print depicts a statue of IMP C VOLVSIANUS AVG (Imperator Caesar Volusianus Augustus). Gaius Vibius Volusianus (died August 253) was a Roman emperor from 251 to 253, ruling with his father Trebonianus Gallus. After Emperor Decius and his son and co-ruler Herennius Etruscus died in battle in June 251, Trebonianus Gallus was elected emperor in the field by the legion. Gallus raised Hostilian, the younger son of Decius, to augustus (co-emperor) and elevated Volusianus to caesar. After the death of Hostilian in July or August 251, Volusianus was raised to augustus. The short reign of Gallus and Volusianus was notable for the outbreak of a plague, which is said by some to be the reason for Hostilian's death, and for hostilities with the Sasanian Empire and the Goths. Volusianus and his father were killed in August 253 by their own soldiers, who were terrified of the forces of the usurper Aemilian which were marching towards Rome. While the statue depicted in this print is engraved with Volusianus' name, the facial features are extremely similar to one of the most famous ancient world statues known as "Augustus of Prima Porta" of Augustus Caesar, the Roman Empire’s first emperor. However, that statue is not the original, but one carved by experienced Greek sculptors, and said to be a replica of a lost bronze original. * Note the Eagle head sword, identical to those depicted in the "Portrait of the Four Tetrarchs" is a porphyry sculpture group of four Roman emperors dating from around 300 AD.* As well as the wild boar carcass held in the emperor's right hand. **SOURCE: I have not been able to positively identify the source of this engraved print. However, there is strong evidence that it is part of a Series titled C. Vibio Volusiano, engraved by Giovanni Cattini (c1715-??), after artwork by Antonio Maria Zanetti II (1706-1778) and published in 1740. Several prints from this series are in the British Museum. A 1740 date is consistent with the characteristics of the laid paper (high quality but thin) and the size. ~~~~ Size: Approximately 12" X 16" VERY OVERSIZED Blank on Reverse Condition: Excellent - Very Good - Good - Fair - Poor (but of historical interest)Exceptional original historical print Very nice; minor edge and corner handling wear; superficial foxing << Click Here to See Other Prints >> This is an Original Item - Not a Reproduction Important: P/H is combined on multiple items that can be mailed together. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
