Description: STERLING SILVER SPOON MOBILE ALABAMA THE OLD CITY PRISON & POLICE STATION c1890 Click images to enlarge Description A rare Whiting sterling silver souvenir spoon for Mobile, Alabama. The bowl has the wording 'Mobile Ala'. The handle has the original state seal/motto of an eagle holding a banner inscribed, 'Here We Rest'. This seal was introduced after the Civil War during the period known as Reconstruction, probably c1875 & was replaced about 50 years later. The antebellum building depicted is 'The Old City Prison & Police Station' which was built in 1830 and demolished in 1895. The building stood on St Emanuel Street in downtown and was sometimes erroneously called 'The Old Spanish Guard House' The spoon is stamped Sterling with the Whiting logo. The spoon is 5 7/8" long, weighs 29 grams and is in very good condition. No dings,No monogram. I would date the spoon to c1890. If you have any questions please email.
