Description: Vintage original 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the classic 1930's pre-Code unrequited love-themed drama/romance, STRANGERS MAY KISS, released in 1931 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and directed by George Fitzmaurice. Based upon a book by Ursula Parrott, against her friends wishes, Lisbeth (Norma Shearer) moves to Mexico to live with her lover. The cast includes Robert Montgomery, Neil Hamilton, Marjorie Rambeau, Irene Rich, Hale Hamilton, Conchita Montenegro, Jed Prouty, and George Davis. The image features a playful interior shot depicting Lisbeth (Norma Shearer) trying to make-up her mind regarding her dinner order as the waiter (George Davis) stands at-the-ready while Alan (Neil Hamilton) awaits her decision. It is in good- condition only with multiple creases in the borders; a tear and heavy wear on the bottom left corner; a repaired tear on the top left corner; and tape residue on the verso. Norma Shearer, who always had a lot of power at MGM as a result of both her audience draw and marriage to acclaimed MGM producer Irving Thalberg, personally selected this story to star in, after having read over 200 different scripts and books. She also officially requested that Robert Montgomery play the lead actor role (in many of Montgomery's 1930’s roles, he is seen exclusively in suits and tuxedos). Shearer had just had a child and was extremely self-conscious about her postpartum appearance. Cinematographer William Daniels remembered, "She worried about her figure and her complexion, and we dickered a lot about the lighting. I had to assure her several times that her figure was as svelte and shapely before her pregnancy." "I don't want the fans to see any difference," she said nervously, "I did my exercises, watched my diet, and I deserve to look good in this. I've earned the right!"
