By seventeen he had quite an impressive portfolio. He was accepted to Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Then achieved a Master of Fine Arts degree at U.C.L.A. in 1976 and ran their new glass art school. By that time he had already created a body of work which quickly found its way into art shows and galleries. In 1977 Stuart left teaching and started Abelman Art Glass, in Southern California. As such, Stuart was one of a select group of pioneering studio glass artists to help found a new art glass studio movement in the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s. To this day, the movement has not slowed, is very popular, and elevates American glass artistry to be generally recognized as world-class. Stuart uses his own formulas and the finest silica sand to ensure the purest quality glass possible. Each piece is made entirely of hot molten glass and is worked and completed at the furnace. All the colors and design patterns are formed from the hot glass. No paint is used. Many of the beautiful colors are made with gold, silver, and other precious metals. "I have been working with hot glass for over thirty-five years and I am certain it runs through my veins.โ Abelmanโs works are shown in galleries and museums around the world and have also become permanent additions to museums, private and celebrity collections here and overseas. His piece in the permanent collection of the Corning Museum is particularly notable for his infusion of life into a figurative sculpture in glass. He was once heard to say, "I have been working with hot glass for over thirty-five years and I am certain it runs through my veins." None of our studio glass is painted! All of it is colored and/or decorated using a chemical process that requires various elements and compounds to produce the final colorations. From the addition of to the melt a selection of substances to achieve the base color, to the application of salts, or oxides to the surface before re-heating in the kiln, they create iridescence and other special surface coloration and/or texture that becomes a permanent part of the glass. The alchemy of hot glass is a process part art, part chemistry, and part dance of movement to achieve the complex works you'll see here. None of the techniques are learned quickly or easily, but it takes years of honing the formulas and skills of the glassblowing process. And, glassblowing is rarely done solo, but it nearly always requires the gaffer's assistants' teamwork to produce this hot-glass artwork!
