Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE THIS RARITY IS A SUPERB QUILL WORK TEA CADDY FROM THE 1790s. IT IS OCTAGONAL IN FORM, OPENS TO REVEAL THE ORIGINAL INSIDE LID, AND THE WATERCOLOR OF A YOUNG CHILD ON THE FRONT OVAL PANEL IS EXQUISITE. Quillwork was made by families of the upper class and aristocracy in England during the 1790s. The satinwood boxes were purchased locally from a cabinetmaker and decorated with scrolled, or rolled, paper which was gilt with gold. Finely executed, this one is beautifully decorated with flowers and leaves with a portrait of a young child. It also possesses the original handle on top. Sold as one of a pair at Bonhams Auction in the early 1990s, their original auction estimate is included (the second tea caddy of the original pair is for sale in another listing). Condition: Exceptional, with very little damage. Very little loss to the original gilding. Only one scroll is missing (see photos) and there is a small amount of damage around the keyhole (see photos). The portrait has a couple small scrapes, and the lid does not close all the way. It would not be advisable to try the original key. The original lining of the inside is gone. Overall, these very small flaws do not detract at all from the beauty of the whole. It is rare to find these in the first place, but especially in this great condition. DIMENSIONS: 3 5/8" x 5" x 4 3/4" high.
