Description: This auction is for a Really Excellent J. W. Young & Sons "AMBIDEX No.1" Fixed-spool reel. The Ambidex No.1 (Type 2) was introduced in 1948 and differed from the slightly earlier Type 1 in a few areas, most significantly in it's new, more durable paint finish. Other changes included an improved spool tensioner and the inclusion of a "Ltd" at the end of J.W. Young's name on the front side plate, denoting manufacture post late 1947, when Youngs became a Limited company. The brass side plates, however were still dark brown in colour with embossed chromed lettering (this would later change on the Type 3 to painted aluminium without embossing). This is an outstanding example, well-looked after, with great paintwork and working perfectly. These early reels have become difficult to find in top condition. Please study the photos carefully as they form a major part of the description.
