Description: Jesse T. Banfield, Photographer (1877-1946). Original Photographic Portrait of the Photographer's Niece Muriel, his favorite model and subject. Superb Original Photograph by Jesse T. Banfield, printed & signed by Him c. 1925 SIGNED Original Silver Gelatin Portrait. 7.75" x 5.75 inches [image area]. (Mounting board measures approximately 13.5 x 10.5 inches.) Signed in graphite by the photographer at the lower right. Tipped-on to a larger backing sheet. Fine condition. Banfield was a member of the Oakland salon pictorial movement. He exhibited in various salons between 1910 and 1917, including the Seventh American Photographic Salon at the John Herron Art Institute; the Ninth American Photographic Salon at the Art Institute of Chicago; and the International Exhibition of the London Salon of Photography, Galleries of the Royal Society. His work was also reproduced in "Architecture & Landscape Gardening of the Exposition," Paul Elder and Co., San Francisco, 1915. He frequently used a soft focus "verito lens" (the same kind used by Ansel Adams until 1929). This photograph is from a collection of originals believed to have been printed by the photographer himself for inclusion in a custom album he presented to his niece, Muriel. The gift inscription from the album reads, "To my niece Muriel / from / Jess." (Album inscription not included with this lot).
