Random House, New York, 1942. 215-page hardcover bound in red cloth, lacks dust jacket. Dark blue illustrations on front and spine; dark blue bar on front contains red SUPERMAN; ten full-page illustrations, including four in full-color on pages 53, 80, 153 and 180; more than 30 smaller black-and-white superman "action" drawings in the style of that on the front cover. Siegel and Schuster spent years developing the character of Superman, which debuted in Action Comics #1, June of 1938. This, the first Superman book, features Shuster's illustrations, and also name changes for Superman's parents that remain to this day. Superman became one of the most popular fictional superheroes of all time, appearing in various radio shows, newspaper comics, television shows and movies. The interior of the book is in good condition: with exceptions to be noted later, nearly all pages are all clean and damage free, with no writing except for a gift inscription on the first free endpaper; all illustrations are clean; those in full color are bright and beautiful; spots of discoloration on pages 30-31 and 50-51; missing bottom corners on pages 31 and 81; tears on pages 120 and 180. (Page 180 has the "speed and power" color illustration, and the closed tear extends into the top 3/16 of an inch of the illustration.) The exterior is fair: loose binding is a bit cocked; boards and page block are slightly separated from spine but still holding well; significant wear to corners and edges of boards and spine; significant discoloration on first and last free endpapers, with much less on inside of front and back boards.
