Description: This is a 1914 Fatima tobacco card of outfielder and third baseman Thomas "Tommy" Leach, pictured when he was playing with the Chicago Cubs. This card was sent to SCG and was authenticated and given a Cert Grade of Very Good 3 and Cert Code of 2964349. It has slight creases and presents beautifully. Thomas "Tommy" Leach (1877-1969) was an outfielder and third baseman who played major league baseball from 1898 through 1918. He is pictured on this card in the uniform of the Chicago Cubs, with whom he played from 1912-1914. He also played for the Louisville Colonels (1898-1899), the Pittsburgh Pirates (1900-1912), the Cincinnati Reds (1915), and again with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1918). He played with the Pirates in the first modern World Series in 1903. He was a member of the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates when they won the World Series in 1909. Jefferson Burdick's designation for this 1914 Fatima set of cards is T222. They were issued by Liggett & Myers Tobacco in packages of Fatima Turkish Blend Cigarettes. They are glossy sepia-tone photos on thin paper stock and prone to creasing. They are larger than most tobacco cards and measure 2 &1/2" x 4 & 1/2". There were several short prints in this series. Some collectors and guides have written that the small numbers printed in the lower left-hand corner of the cards indicate rarity; the baseball card numbers range from 2-9 and then skip 10 and 11 (see the next paragraph), then 12-15. It is an ascending order of rarity, the bigger the number, the rarer. This card has a rarity number of "9" in the lower-left-hand corner. The Fatima advertisement on the reverse of the cards indicate that there were 100 cards in the set; fifty-two were baseball players, four more were athletes from other sports, "American Athletic Champions", which had the number "10" in the lower left-hand corner, Sprinter Baker for example, and seven "Photoplay" actors and actresses. That results in 63 cards, but there is always the likelihood that more will be discovered. The non-sports number in the rarity scale is 11; it is seen in the lower-left hand corner of a couple of the Photoplay (actors and actresses) cards in this set, including the cards of actor Crane Wilbur and actress Pearl Sindelar.
