Description: Tacoma is the county seat of Pierce County, Washington, a port city situated along Washington’s Puget Sound on Commencement Bay, 32 miles southwest of Seattle, 31 miles northeast of the state capital, Olympia, and 58 miles northwest of Mount Rainier National Park. It serves as the center of business activity for the South Sound region. The area was inhabited for thousands of years by Native Americans, most recently the Puyallup People, who lived in settlements on the delta. In 1864, pioneer and postmaster Job Carr built a cabin. He hoped to profit from the selection of Commencement Bay as the terminus of the “Transcontinental Railroad” but sold most of his claim to developer Morton McCarver who named his project “Tacoma City”, derived from the indigenous name for the mountain. Tacoma was incorporated in 1875, following its selection in 1873 as the western terminus of the “Northern Pacific Railroad”. The transcontinental link was completed in 1887, and the population grew from 1,098 in 1880 to 36,006 in 1890 but discovery of gold in the Klondike in 1898 led to Tacoma’s prominence in the region being eclipsed by the development of Seattle. Being on Commencement Bay, part of Puget Sound, Tacoma is a deep-water port and was an early center of commerce. This is a card published by the “Central News Co.” which was located in Philadelphia with Tacoma as one of their regional branches. The card is a UDB, posted 1906 with the image of “Loading Lumber Vessels, Tacoma Washington” and is in good condition with some soiling of the image and reverse, a dog eared lower right corner but generally minor wear overall and is presentable. It is a great historic picture of masted ships at the dock with a message on the front. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible. Corrections appreciated. If this your card, it will be mailed promptly upon receipt of payment......
