He specialized in applied sociology. He was the 16th president of the American Sociological Association and was also active in the American Red Cross. He worked at Ashland College in Ohio and at the State University of Iowa. Gillin served as a Professor of Social Sciences at Iowa University, and then as Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, where he served for 46 years. He co-authored "Outlines of Sociology", which is described as the first widely used introductory text in sociology. Gillin became an ordained minister with The Church of the Brethren. Gillin's reputation rested mainly on his work in criminology and penology. He wrote books as well as articles in journals. During World War II, Gillin was the Director of the Department of Civilian Relief of the Central Division of the American Red Cross. He also served as National Director of Educational Service for the American Red Cross. For one year during World War II, he was public member, Region VI, of the National War Labor Board. John Lewis Gillin died on December 8, 1958.
