This machine, which was introduced at the first race in Argentina in 1977, had a slender body with a sharp wedge shape. The inside of the side pontoon is shaped like an upside-down wing compared to the aircraft, and the ground effect generates downforce. It boasted overwhelming cornering speed by adopting an innovative idea of increasing the tire's ground contact force without increasing air resistance. This year it was driven by Mario Andretti and Gunnar Nilsson. Andretti won the Western American, Spanish, French and Italian GPs, while Nilsson also won the Belgian Grand Prix. The Type 78, which was used until the first half of 1978, gave a strong impression of the rebirth of the prestigious model.
