Description: The approximate size is height: about 7.5 cm, diameter: about 12.5 cm. Anagama fired chawan, wheel thrown and sculpted from stoney clay, by Kowari Tetsuya. This beautiful natural ash glazed chawan has a three-sided sculpted kodai (foot), the sculpting extending up across the body of the bowl, integrating the foot and bowl in a unique way, and is essentially his “signature”. The bowl also has numerous notches carved into the side of the kodai and into the first throwing line under the rim, a little detail that makes the surface of the bowl more interesting and unique. The wood ash accumulations, accented by the melted white stones in the clay, are quite beautiful, especially inside the bowl, and yet very earthy. Kowari was born in Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture, in 1970. He graduated from Meiji University in 1992 and completed their graduate program in 1994 and started learning Japanese cooking. In 1997, he started making ceramics under the guidance of his father, Shoji and in 1999 he visited kilns in China and learned about Chinese ceramics. He built an anagama kiln when he returned to Japan and received further guidance from Kato Ryokichi. In 2000, he won 1st Prize at an exhibition at Osaka Namba Takashimaya and also won the Shizuoka Prefecture Arts and Crafts Exhibition Prize at the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art. Between 2000 and 2005 he was selected for 11 important exhibitions. He was selected for the prestigious Nitten Exhibition in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013, along with many other exhibitions and awards. Between 2014 and 2020 he was selected for many more exhibitions and received many awards including the Prime Minister’s Award at the 28th Nikkokai Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art.
