Author Biography Sir Arthur George Doughty KBE CMG FRSC (22 March 1860 - 1 December 1936) was a Dominion Archivist and Keeper of the Public Records of Canada. Doughty was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England, the son of William Doughty. He attended public schools in Maidenhead, Lord Eldon School in London, and New Inn Hall, Oxford. In 1886, he immigrated to Canada and settled in Montreal. He was hired to the Quebec governments revenue department before becoming private secretary to the Minister of Public Works in 1897. He was appointed as the second Dominion Archivist and Keeper of the Records in May 1904, after being chosen joint librarian of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec in 1900. He held this position until 1935. Under his direction, the Public Archives of Canada set out to locate and catalog important archival material in various parts of the country. He published or edited a number of works, including the Siege of Quebec and the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759, as well as Canadian constitutional documents and the 23-volume work Canada and its Provinces, which he co-edited with Adam Shortt.
