That history officially started with the purchase of the Navy's first aircraft (the A-1, May 8, 1911). There followed many tenuous years of trial and error before naval aviation was fully accepted. That acceptance began with the 1914 establishment of an official home for the fledgling program... the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida (eventual site of the N.M.N.A.). In January of that year, the USS Mississippi and USS Orion steamed into Pensacola Bay and deposited the Navy's entire inventory of aviation paraphernalia and personnel at the all but abandoned old Navy Yard. It was here in Pensacola that the Navy had decided that naval air was to either live or die. There is speculation that naval aviation was sent to what was then a very remote old naval facility in the hopes that the flying fad would soon diminish and fade away. But there were some very determined and talented people in that 1914 group who had decided that naval aviation had a distinct place in the future of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, and they set out to prove it. They did exactly that. If anything, their vision of naval aviation's future was conservative. Naval aviation not only had a practical place, it has since come to be the primary and most indispensable element in our nation's sea services.
