Description: This piece of art is an impression of an original etching, on copper plate, titled "The Artist's Mother with her Hand on her Chest: Small Bust" by Rembrandt Van Rijn. The etching was initialed by the artist in the plate ("RL") and dated "1631." In this poignant portrait, with fine detail, strong contrast and delicate line work, Rembrandt captures his mother's careworn face and tender expression as she is found in contemplation, her eyes cast downward. This work is an excellent example of the revolutionary notion known as Rembrandt's "psychological portraiture," where the sitter's humanity and spiritual essence are more deeply expressed than their mere physical likeness. The plate size was 3-5/8" x 2-1/2", and the impression was printed on Ingres d'Arches off-white laid paper (as indicated by the watermark) measuring 12-7/8" x 9-3/4". The print was professionally matted and framed in an elaborate bronze-tone frame measuring 24-3/4" high x 24-1/4" wide, and is ready to hang. After his death in 1669, most records suggest that only 82 of his 300-plus copper plates had not been previously cancelled or destroyed. Impressions of eight of these plates were printed between 1994 & 2004, and it has been certified that only 2500 impressions were printed from each plate (called the 'Millennium' edition).
