Description: The Crusades Iron Men & Saints Harold Lamb Leather Hardcover 1931 From an online review: "As many reviewers here have mentioned, this is a work of popular as opposed to scholarly history, but it is nonetheless most excellent. Lamb himself is a well-researched scholar who has personally visited many of the sites and locations he describes, but he tailors his writing about this fascinating historical period for a wider audience than strictly academicians. Starting with a brief overview of the feudal world of that time, moving through the Pope's announcement of the need to save Christians under assault in the Holy Land, and tracing the route taken and the people involved, Lamb takes his reader on a fascinating journey, almost as if one is personally marching along. Lamb hits all the highlights, mentions all the big players and embellishes his retelling with excerpts from primary sources and eye witness accounts. He is able to maintain an essentially objective and impartial viewpoint as he describes the clash of religion and worldview as West meets East, showing how events likely appeared from both sides. Lamb avoids cluttering up his text with too many footnotes and arcane references, although there are some extensive Notes at the end for those interested in further research. For someone accustomed to learning history through reading fictionalized accounts, straight history itself is in this case just as entertaining and rewarding to read. Highly recommended."
