As each album had been getting progressively darker, there seemed little room for the Cure to go after "Faith", but "Pornography" found something new-- Robert Smith (guitar, vocals, keys), Simon Gallup (bass, keys), and Lol Tolhurst (drums, keys) constructed something dark, edgy, and frightening, taking the haunted mood of the last album and adding aggression and noise. The guitars have become more distorted and louder, and the drums have been moving into a somewhat more tribal pattern. The result is something much more in your face than anything the Cure had done. Nowhere is this more obvious than the opener, probably best summed by the line "waiting for the death blow", "One Hundred Years" is full of edgy guitars and despondant passion. This sort of passionate delivery is a thread throughout the album-- take the powerful invocation of "I will never be clean again" on "The Figurehead" (over a great tribal drum pattern from Tolhurst) or the plodding but effective "Siamese Twins", rescued by a great Smith vocal. While the album is pretty dark, it does get fairly varied-- "A Strange Day" seems almost optimistic (if you don't listen too closely to what Smith is singing) and the album does cover a number of moods, from rock ("One Hundred Years") to pseudo-ambient ("A Short Term Effect") to a sort of gothic progressive rock ("Cold"). Start to finish, its a fantastic album, and unlike many albums with a somewhat unvaried mood, this one is quite listenable. As the rest of the Cure remasters, the sound is fantastic, crisp, clean, showing every nuance of the music and allowing its expressiveness to breathe. Again, the liner notes include a candid and honest essay about the creation of the album and the tour that followed, and a disc of bonus material is included. The demos, given the sort of bleak production of the music, are often quite telling on this one, and the live material is nothing short of fantastic, although the sound quality in both cases is not letter perfect for obvious reasons, but given the strength of the material, it carries through well enough. If you're new to the Cure but used to kind of odd music, this might be a good place to start, its certainly one of their peaks, and thsi reissue only makes it sound better Track Listings 1. I can't listen to this record too much because it requires a great deal from the listener, and at the wrong moments can almost be painful. Inevitably throughout the course of a listen to Faith I will get that hollow distant feeling in the pit of my stomach, that raw ache that people like Camus and Sartre were so keen on. Very few records still have that sort of impact after repeated listens, particular as many repeated listens as this ones gotten from me. The album is bleak and sparse, alternating from jagged, angular bass guitar duets like primary to the surreal synthetic and electric soundscapes of all cats are grey. It requires a listener's patience and a willingness to be taken into it's realm. The songs are long, and many of them ignore traditional song forms completely, eschewing such limiting devices as verses choruses and refrains. In my opinion this is The Cure's most fully realized work, and while their song craft has taken them in many different directions since the early eighties when this came out, when people talk about the Cure, the album that comes into my mind is their third release, Faith. It's so agonizingly gorgeous, everyone should hear it at least twice. Track Listings 1. The Holy Hour 2. Primary 3. Other Voices 4. All Cats Are Grey 5. The Funeral Party 6. Doubt 7. The Drowning Man 8. Originally released in 1980 as the follow up to their debut album, three imaginary boys, and featuring a new line-up that included Simon Gallup and Mathieu Hartley. This is the album that gave the band their first hit ('a forest') and also began to solidify the brooding atmospheric sound that would soon make these grandfathers of Goth International Pop icons. This edition features 15 bonus tracks from the deluxe CD edition. This is an awesome, moody little album that fits right in today with the slew of bands going after the early-80s 'post-punk' sound. This disc marks the first of a masterful trilogy that continues with Faith and Pornography. The Cure are famous for being gloomy, and this album backs it up, but it's not heavy or depressing and it never gets to be too much. Quite the opposite. Some songs are slower, like In Your House, while other like Play For Today (the first track after the instrumental opening) open up with an electronic calling in the back and a punchy little rhythm, immediately catchy, and the perfect length. Three, meanwhile, has the feeling of a dark jingle. At Night has a slow, fuzzy opening and a steady beat, sounding a little like a dark Police. The classic track A Forest sounds even richer in the remastered format. There's the classic Cure guitar, the bobbing basslines, some swishy help from the keyboards in the background to lend that gray atmosphere...it sounds like 1980, it's spot-on. The whole trilogy is accompanied by perfect album art--they each sound like the covers. A wash of muted colors on what looks like a blurry windshield here, to the mysterious gray, faint scribbling of Faith, to the tortured Scream-like cover of Pornography. An addictive album of good songs, with Smith's voice never overbearing, nor never too much whining, and some very fine singing. Pornography would bring the band to a darker place, with its far more depressed quality. Seventeen Seconds is getting there, but it's minor-key pop with some very good production. Cure addicts may break it down more in terms of band lineups, but I find the whole release an excellent effort. Quite frankly, better than most of the bands out there who were in diapers when this was released, you may as well check out the original thing. And at 30-odd minutes, it's the old style of complete, quality beginning-to-end albums perfect for a slow day at home, preferably in the middle of the week when it's raining. The new Cure remastereds are excellent, a real value for fans. For one, the sound is vastly improved--just compare any track on here, but especially 'A Forest'--big difference. The bass is bigger, punchier, the sounds are all clearer and brought up front. The older, unremastered rock albums really do suffer with the original LP format--everything is flattened right out to the middle, while the new discs bring much-needed oomph to everything. The second disc is full of goodies, from demos to live versions of nearly the entire album in great sound quality. And of course, nice liner notes with actual notes, old pictures, the whole job.
