Description: The Dwarf By PÄR LAGERKVIST Translated from Swedish by Alexandra Dick Vintage Paperback Book (Unknown Year) This vintage paperback book is in good used condition. This is likely a 1958 paperback edition. There is no year printed in the book aside from 1945, however the cover of the book states 1951 Nobel Prize for Literature, so it is definitely not 1945. I have looked everywhere for other issues of this same copy to reference, but this is the only blue cover out there. There is moderate shelf wear and creases, but the book is tight and complete. There are no markings, names, etc. in this book. Please see the photos for the condition as the photos are of the actual book that you will receive. Thank you! Overview Pär Lagerkvist, winner of the 1951 Nobel Prize for Literature and a member of the Swedish Academy, was born in 1891 in the south of Sweden. A playwright, poet, essayist and novelist, he has over thirty-five books to his credit."I have noticed that sometimes I frighten people; what they really fear is themselves. They think it is I who scare them, but it is the dwarf within them, the ape-faced manlike being who sticks up his head from the depths of their souls."Pär Lagerkvist's richly philosophical novel The Dwarf is an exploration of individual and social identity. The novel, set in a time when Italian towns feuded over the outcome of the last feud, centers on a social outcast, the court dwarf PIccoline. From his special vantage point Piccoline comments on the court's prurience and on political intrigue as the town is gripped by a siege. Gradually, Piccoline is drawn deeper and deeper into the conflict, and he inspires fear and hate around him as he grows to represent the fascination of the masses with violence.
