Gandalf selected Bilbo as the Burglar for Thorin's company in part because of his lineage (and possibly also because of prophecy), and Bilbo helps them restore the Dwarf Kingdom under the Mountain at Erebor. Along the way, he finds the One Ring in Gollum's lair. He retires from adventuring to write his memoirs, and eventually leaves the Shire for Rivendell, leaving his home and Ring to his nephew Frodo.
