Description: “The Goose Girl” Print by Stanley Royle (once thought to be William Leech) National Gallery of Ireland. Triple bevel, hand, cut mount (ready for framing). See pictures to see that plastic is torn and taped, but there appears to be no damage to the mats or print. According to “The Irish Times,” July 1, 2023, “It is one of the National Gallery’s (NGI) most recognisable paintings and, for 25 years, The Goose Girl was wrongly attributed to the Irish artist William Leech. Only in 1996 did the gallery admit it had made a mistake m, and the work was actually by the little-known British painter Stanley Royle.” I’m not an expert, but I wonder if the fact the print was marked with the incorrect artist, might add to its value. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting story and piece of history!
