Description: The Goths in the Fourth Century by John Matthews, Peter Heather This volume brings together many important historical texts, the majority of them (speeches of Themistius, the Passion of St Saba, and evidence relating to the life and work of Ulfila) not previously available in English translation. FORMAT Paperback LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description More is known about the Goths than the other peoples who invaded and divided up the Roman Empire. The Goths are thus an important reference point for discussions of tribal movements and their effects. This volume brings together some of the historical texts relating to the Goths - the speeches of Themistius, the "Passion of St. Saba" and evidence relating to the life and work of Ulfila. There are also extracts from the Gothic New Testament. The book also explores the archaeological evidence relating to the Sintana de Mures-Cenjachov culture. Taken together, these sources tell us a great deal about the social and religious organization of the Goths, and of the nature of their relations with the Roman state in the period before their fateful crossing of the Danube in 376. Author Biography E. A. Thompson was Professor of Classics at the University of Nottingham from 1948-1979. His previous books include "A History of Attila and The Huns, The Early Germans, The Goths in Spain, Romans and Barbarians" and "Who was St Patrick?" "The Huns" includes a revised afterword by Peter Heather, Lecturer of Ancient History at University College London.Professor Thompson died in 1994.
