The Hallicrafters Co. Model S-38 Shortwave Radio, Restored and Working

Description: Thinning out my personal collection, I'm running out of space! The Hallicrafters Co. Model S-38 Shortwave Radio was the 1st in the S-38 line, this one from 1946. Hard to believe it's over 70 years old. This was an entry level radio for the time and features single conversion circuitry, and as a result, powerful AM radio stations will sometimes appear as images on the higher bands. The S-38 (non-A) featured a separate BFO circuit which was removed from the B model thru to the end of the production. Radio has been re-capped, tubes tested (only strong ones are used in this rig) and has been aligned, switches cleaned and lubricated. All knobs have new set screws. AC Line cord has been replaced and a Polarized plug added for for safety (the hot side is now switched). I bench tested the radio for several hours with no issues. The CW knob is a Hallicrafters original knob, but it is not an exact replacement for BFO control knob. It does work though. Over a period of days I cruised the bands and logged what was heard, morning, afternoon and nighttime. Results below: .54Mhz to 1.6 Mhz Max No. signals at any one time 471.6Mhz to 5Mhz Max No. signals at any one time 40, plus CHU 3.33, WWV 5.05Mhz to 14Mhz Max No. signals at any one time 55, plus WWV 5.0, CHU 7.850, WWV 10.0, WWV 15.013Mhz to 30 Mhz Max No. signals at any one time 29, plus WWV 15.0, WWV20.0 All HF Ham bands were monitored, CW, and Sideband signals can be heard with very careful tuning, the Bandspread is very effective at separating signals. Even heard FT8 signals, I did not try to demodulate them :) Don't expect a plug and play DX wonder machine, but as you can tell it's fun to play with! I ship UPS, CONUS only.
