Whether it’s out and about foraging for native edibles or spacing out in my parked car, phone in hand, I’ll see something move out of the corner of my eye. “Oh hey! A squirrel!” I’ll say before I resume whatever I was doing. In reading this book, I felt a growing fascination for these curious creatures. The author describes building a relationship with one such squirrel. I was amazed to find this was no isolated incident. The book includes vignettes of other people following similar journeys in which they overcome a squirrel’s initial distrust and gain a little friend! I particularly enjoyed the section dedicated to a not-so-scientific squirrel growth chart. “The tweenager stage”, or the “I’m Not Eating My Broccoli stage” got a surprised bark of laughter from me. In turns touching, funny, and informative, this is a neat little book! Running at 115 pages, it’s a nice afternoon read. There are many full color photos to enjoy from a new perspective: close up! Going in, I basically had no opinion on squirrels. Cute, extremely skittish, lightning fast, occasionally fascinating to my cats. Now, I can appreciate my furry little neighbors a bit more. Did you know there’s a brain and a personality in there? Not a cartoon drawing of a shelled peanut? My personal connection to these animals is as follows: for over 25 years l have rescued, raised and released orphaned baby squirrels. For fun, I am also a member of a private squirrel group on Facebook. While scrolling the pages of this group, l came across a man named Peter Murano who posted videos of his squirrel friend named Sandy, which caught my attention because they had such a special bond. The interaction between Sandy and Peter was amazing - it was the same as some I've had with my releases. So I assumed Sandy was a captive-raised release – only to find out that Sandy was an adult wild squirrel. This made their bond more amazing, and their unique relationship made his posts very special to me. The book started out giving me information about the human connection with the squirrel as far back as the Native Americans, Frontier and Colonial Days, then to find out that Benjamin Franklin had a pet squirrel. I'd have never known these facts if l didn't read the book. The book contains chapters written by several squirrel fans besides Peter. I enjoyed reading about the squirrels on the other side of the Atlantic, and seeing the cute photos of Patricia, Sneaky and Mrs. Double, to name a few. Next, the account of “Mr. Squirrel” made me smile on more than one occasion. Then came the bittersweet tale of Toby, which revealed a California man’s attachment to his squirrel visitor. The reader will find invaluable advice and insight in the chapter written by the squirrel rehabber. An interview with a veterinarian delved into topics such as squirrel taming and squirrel intelligence. The end of the book explored the concept of “The Circle of Joy”, and explained the book’s title.
