The only evidence comes from the first Spanish conquerors, who picked up information from the native population. Heirs, among others, of the brilliant civilizations which preceded them, the Incas were originally an unimportant tribe from the Quechua region, on the banks of Lake Titicaca, which separates Peru and Bolivia. The Mayas The Maya civilization extended mainly over parts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, the Honduras and el Salvador. Established at the end of the 3rd millennium BC, Maya civilization peaked between the 6th century and 9th century of our era, before declining and disappearing at the time of the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Aztecs The Aztecs, or Mexicas (from their capital city's name, Mexico-Tenochtitlan) settled around the beginning of the 14th century. In the 16th century, the Aztec Empire had a flourishing economy, represented by the wealth of its capital city, Tenochtitlan, the current Mexico-city. The Incas The Incas left no written record. They joined a loose confederation of other tribes, at first in a minor, non-dominant role. With the Aztecs and the Incas, it was one of the three great pre-Columbian civilizations which shaped the New World before the arrival of Europeans. Its legacy is principally architectural, evidenced by the imposing ruins of palaces and pyramid temples scattered across the jungle, such as Chichen Itza, Uxmal or Palenque. Maya civilization is also admired for its advanced mathematical and astrological knowledge, as well as the only established system of writing in pre-Colombian America. Human sacrifice was a common and essential ritual, necessary to the well-being and balance of the cosmos. On the 18th of February 1519, the conquistador Hernan Cortez lands on the Yucatan coasts. At first considered a superhuman by the Aztecs, he is given priceless gifts. After this first peaceful meeting, the Spanish triggers hostilities. The invaders definitively crushed this civilisation on August 1521, leaving their capital city in ruins.
