Description: "A tale of unethical journalism, sensationalism, fake news, police misconduct, and national paranoia that is pretty much a product of its time (the terrorism of the Red Army Faction looms over the movie) yet still painfully resonating and relevant for our presence. It´s an infuriating, unsettling film that is easy to get invested in. It´s difficult not to feel anything, when you see the rights and dignity of an individual trampled on in the name of “greater goods” such as “the freedom of the press” or the “the fight against terrorism”. And it´s disheartening to think about how little has changed in some regards. The newspaper in the movie is simply called “The Paper” but it´s obvious that it´s a stand-in for the German tabloid newspaper “Bild”, which is still as infamous for its sensationalism and lack of journalistic standards as it was in the 70s. I´m sure every country has its equivalents to “Bild”. And let´s not talk about internet journalism and social media. Fake news and character assassination are even bigger issues now than during the time of the movie. Political themes aside, “The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum” also simply is a gripping drama thanks to the skilled direction of Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe von Trotta, the performances of Angela Winkler, Mario Adorf, Dieter Laser, and Jürgen Prochnow, and the compelling cinematography of Jost Vacano, who is known for “Das Boot” as well as 7 collaborations with Paul Verhoeven. All in all, “The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum” is a harsh, sharp, and affecting indictment of media, police, and state that still packs a punch." -Letterboxd
