Photo # 1 shows the front cover and the articles in the magazine: Kunming, Southwest Gateway to China, Across Tibet From India to China, Sky High in Lama Land, Yanks at Westminster, Democracy's Royal Palace and Down Mexico's, River, The Rio Baisas. Photo # 2 shows the back cover and an advertisement for Coca Cola, you could buy for a nickel. Photo # 3 shows the binding. Photo 4 shows a Kodachrome photo by Joseph Pasantino, showing young Chinese looking at a camera held by U.S. Army Lieutenant. During World War II, Kunming was a Chinese military center and the location of the headquarters for the U.S. Army Forces China-Burma-India. Wujiaba Airport served as the home of the First American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Republic of China Air Force, nicknamed the Flying Tigers. Kunming was also a transport terminus for the Burma Road. Photo # 5 shows the Citizens of Kunming and U.S. solders celebrating the First Convoy to Travel a Wartime Lifeline from India. The ceremonies were held on February 5th,1945. Kunming was at the end of the Stilwell Road. The road was named for General Joseph W. Stilwell, also known as Vinegar Joe. General Stillwell was much loved by the Citizens of China and the Chinese Citizens protected and maintained the former residence of General Joseph W Stillwell, the Allied Chief of Staff in China, which is located in the Yuzhong District of Chongqing Province. General Stillwell was in charge of the United States Lend-Lease Policy with the Chinese Forces. The residence later became known at The Stillwell Museum, (Chinese: 史迪威博物馆) which is open to the public. The Museum comprises a three story house furnished in 1940's style. I am pretty sure there is no other museum in the world dedicated to an Army United States General. So thank you to China. Photo # 6 shows a Bust of General Stillwell with United States Ambassador to China, Robert Nicholas Burns. This picture is not in National Geographic Article. Photo # 7 shows a stone table engraving of a letter from President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Citizens of Chongging. The City of Chongging was chosen as the provisional Capitol of China due to its frequently foggy weather conditions. It was also home to numerous industrial facilities, and both both factors made it a prime target for Japanese air attacks. The letter reads in part: In the name of the people of the United States of America, I present this scroll to City of Chungking as a symbol of our admiration for its brave men, women and children who suffered terribly during War II. The picture of the stone letter is not in the National Graphic Magazine but just for reference. Photo # 8 shows a photo of a busy street, marking Kunming's transformation from an ancient remote community to hustling supply center. Through the old city gate in the background passes a steady stream of coolies, peasants, soldiers in padded cotton uniforms, and a pack train of Mongolian Ponies. As a wartime terminus of the land and air routes and an oil pipeline from India, Kunming became a boom town. Photo # 9 shows charcoal balls for fuel are molded by hand and left to dry at waters edge. Photo # 10 shows the Temple Guardian which is supposed to frighten away evil spirits. The ornate figure is about 20 feet high at the entrance of a temple on Hsi Shan or West Moutnain, across Lake Ten Chih from Kunming. A score of lavishly decorated temples and pagodas lined with statues of Budda and various divinities, cluster of the step sides of the mountain. Photo # 11 shows the Three R's (reading riting and rithametic) earn a livelihood for respected Chinese Scribes, show here reading a letter for the coolie. this Kunming scribe in traditional black gown and cap, pauses to sip tea. He and fellows write and read letter for their illiterate country men. The remaining photos show some great ads in the magazine.
