The Hawaiians believe Cook to be Lono, their long-awaited god of the harvest. Cook chooses not to dispel this misconception and some of his men, including Ship's Master William Bligh (later captain of H.M.S. Bounty), believe the mission doomed to failure because of what they see as their captain's blasphemy. A quiet rebellion follows, as Captain Cook, a scientist and a man of reason, opposes the religious convictions of his adversary.The story is told by Jonathan Forrest, a midshipman on Cook's flagship. Through his eyes are shown many scenes of shipboard and island life, the thoughts and actions of the captain, and the events leading ultimately to the tragedy which befell the first Europeans to visit the Hawaiian Islands. This is one of my favorite books, but the first edition is very rare in any state, and very expensive with an original dust jacket, so I have endeavored to bring this ex-library copy back to its former glory so that others can enjoy it as it was first published. It should make a great addition to any vintage book collection, especially for those interested in the history of Hawaii and British maritime history.
