The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1894 by three sisters: Hannah, Elizabeth, and Katharine Shipley. These sisters were strong-minded, well-educated Quaker women who established the school to prepare young women for Bryn Mawr College, which was quite progressive at the time. Initially known as “The Misses Shipley’s School Preparatory to Bryn Mawr College,” the school started with just seven students and a few faculty members. Over the years, it has grown significantly and evolved into a coeducational institution, now serving students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The Shipley School has always emphasized both academic excellence and character development, reflecting the Quaker values of its founders. The school motto, “Fortiter in Re, Leniter in Modo” (Courage for the Deed, Grace for the Doing), encapsulates this philosophy.
