Description: From Tank Workshop, a DRG Class 52 Kreigslokomotiven/Locomotive resin model kit. In 1939 the German locomotive building industry was relatively small but efficient, with an estimated manufacturing capability of 800 to 900 locomotives per annum. At the onset of World War II, one urgent task was to fulfill the demand for locomotives necessary for the railways in occupied and controlled territories. This objective was fulfilled with the development of the Class 52 type of 2-10-0 Locomotive. The resultant German production was colossal! With over 6,000 locomotives of this class completed in 2.5 years (plus over 1,000 additional similar locomotives), the German Kriegslokomotiven marked a production performance unparalleled in a century and a half of steam locomotive manufacturing. Production was scheduled to commence in January of 1943 but such was the urgency that the first locomotive steamed on September 12, 1942 at the Borsig works, a full four months before the design was formally finalized! In all, 20 major Locomotive works were producing the Class 52, including 11 in Germany, 4 in Belgium and 1 each in the following countries: Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Hungary and Poland. Post WWII dispersal of Class 52 was even more diverse than those left behind in the German retreat. The “funny looking tender”, which is essentially half a cylinder, evolved concurrently with the design of the Class 52 Locomotives. Developed by Westwaggon in Cologne, this model K4T30 tender (later K4T32 or 2’2’T32) was, if anything even more innovative than the locomotive that pulled it. This highly unusual design provided a 20% increase in coal/water capacity combined with a savings in empty weight approaching 35% over conventional rectangular tender design. One report further boasts 30% material savings and 50% in man-hour savings. There are many variants of the Class 52. We have chosen to model the variant produced in greatest quantity and used over the widest geographical area.
