The Third Man, Vol. 1 [DVD]Jonathan Harris , Harry Lime

Description: THE THIRD MAN was one of the most popular and influential of postwar British films, and among its other offshoots was the late '50s series of the same name starring Michael Rennie as Harry Lime (an international adventurer and troubleshooter here, rather than a black marketeer) and Jonathan Harris as Bradford Webster, his assistant. Evidently at least a few of the series' episodes have been allowed to fall out of copyright, which is how Critics Choice Video has come to release these four episodes. As is typical of this sort of release, the source material is questionable, with a choppy -- really chopped up -- introductory credit sequence and generally a washed-out look with missing frames and scratches spread intermittently throughout the show. It's watchable, but that's it. The second episode looks just about the same, though perhaps slightly less washed out. The third episode, "A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE," is part of the later production history of the show and looks to be of almost legitimate quality, but the fourth episode, "HOUSE OF BON BONS" -- a semi-serious entry with a comic opening premise -- starts out terribly, with framing and frame problems in the opening credits and intermittent missing frames in the opening scene. The episodes each get seven chapters, which is more than adequate to cover the 26-minute running time of each. The disc opens on a simple menu, to which one must return at the end of each show -- there are no other extras, though there is an error in the packaging, which promises "Martin Millner" (sic) in one show; it's actually a British actor named Martin Miller. The familiar faces that are here include Patricia Medina and Alan Napier.
