Description: The True Glory " width="100%" height="90" border="0"> 'THE TRUE GLORY' and other U.S. Propaganda films DVD Video Description Loose Cannon is proud to preserve the USA's military history via its unique DVD film collections. Using a combination of U.S. Dept. of Defense archive films and period newsreels of the time, each film features actual wartime footage and or first-person accounts from those that were there. This disc features one of the most famous propaganda films of WWII, The True Glory. It was designed to document the great acomplishments of the Allies counterattack in Western Europe from D-Day onwards. Other films in this set are focused on the Pacific campaign and the brutal fighting that occured at each Japanese-held garrison and island fortress. Lastly, a more modern film from the 70's features actor John Wayne. This DVD contains four movies: - The True Glory General Eisenhower introduces this joint US/British Government film that surveys the entire campaign in Western Europe from just before D-Day to the surrender of Germany in May 1945. Directed by Carol Reed. It uses multiple perspectives of US and British soldiers, as well as a Canadian, a French resistence fighter, a Parisian family, an African-American tank gunner, and several female perspectives including a nurse, and clerical staff. The title is taken from a letter of Sir Francis Drake, which is quoted in a final caption: "There must be a beginning of any great matter, but the continuing unto the end until it be thoroughly finished yields the true glory." This film won an Academy Award for "Best Documentary Feature" in 1946. (1 hr. 23 min) - Remember these Faces (1945) Color A short film used to sell war bonds; it follows the typical American serviceman from his landing on an unnamed Pacific island, combat, his being wounded in action, and arrival at a military hospital. First the island is softened then the assault, then the ebb as wounded are treated. Vivid footage of wounded treated by corpsmen and then to a hospital ship. The faces of the fighting men and the the wounded men are stunningly shown. (17 min) - The 957th Day A propaganda short produced by the US Navy in 1944. The film uses authentic battle footage of the taking of Guam on July 21, 1944, and one narration follows the battle chronologically, while another narration mimics a radio news caster voice, all superimposed on some very graphic combat footage. The combat footage is compiled from several days of fighting and actually begins with ships readying for the invasion at Eniwetok (in June). This movie leads the viewer to believe that the island was secured on July 21, 1944, when in fact the island was not declared secure until August 10, 1944 after the loss of nearly 19,000 dead between the two sides. (10 min) - PATRIOTISM: HAVE IT YOUR WAY (1978) Narrated by John Wayne, this film presents definitions of patriotism by U.S. citizens, members of our armed forces and Vietnam POW returnees. The voices of Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman and John Kennedy express reasons why American servicemen fought and died for their country through the years. Draws the conclusion that patriotism is alive, well and working in the United States. Love this film's 'in your face' attitude and 1970's military era outlook.
