Shiflet | Dell First Edition 1959 | Western Novel Summary of the Book: Set in the rugged Oregon Territory of 1855, The Valiant Strain tells the story of a lone Dragoon company tasked with fighting for a future that seems increasingly out of reach. At the heart of the narrative is Second Lieutenant Edward Shirley Graham, a young officer trying to command respect among his men while grappling with his own demons. Nicknamed “Gloves Graham” by his troops, the lieutenant is thrust into a chaotic struggle against hostile tribes as war breaks out in the region. Amid the violence and shifting alliances, Graham and his men are tested both physically and morally. The story explores themes of leadership, camaraderie, and the brutal reality of frontier warfare. Kenneth E. Shiflet’s gripping narrative paints a vivid picture of a harsh and unforgiving landscape where survival demands courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering “valiant strain” in all who endure. Text from Back Cover: A story as big and rugged as the Oregon Territory of 1855 … A story of a lone Dragoon company fighting for a future it might never see, and of a shavetail lieutenant who had nothing in common with his men, except the valiant strain that brought them to their final glory. Text from Preface/Forward/Prologue: War came suddenly to Oregon in the year 1855. Its signs had been there but the emigrants had not wanted to believe them. The Indians told of hearing the ground speak, telling them they had no right to sell the land given them by the Great Spirit. Squatted warriors stopped making the slender hunting points, and the short, sharp blades of the war arrow began appearing. Leech, the Naugualam, crossed the mountains from his Pacific lodges and began preaching his crusade of rapine and murder to the inland tribes. With the dying strength of his race he traveled day and night like a prophet among them, along the thread of Columbia from the Cascades to the Walla Walla, even south into Shoshone country where the great Snakes lived. He was eloquent and persuasive and told in the councils of false treaties and the terrible policy hiding the land of death and no sunlight where the whites would carry all Indians to die. Kamiakin and Caina and other chiefs listened. The Naugualam knew the red god and spoke Big Medicine. His talk was true. The red god would become the white’s shadow, moved by him but moved and forever shielded from the sun. And their Yakimas and Klickitats, who had wronged and been wronged, made their own peace for war. The killing efficiency of their warrior union swept across the Territory as fire moves through an October field. As in all Indian wars, the penalty fell heaviest on the innocent, both red and white.
