The fold out map covers the San Bernardino at the north and San Diego on the south and the Colorado River on the east. George Wharton James was an American popular lecturer, photographer, journalist and editor. He served in parishes in Nevada and Southern California, gradually beginning his journalism and writing career. An editor of two magazines, he also wrote more than 40 books and many articles and pamphlets on California and the American Southwest. The illustrator, Carl Eytel, was a German-American artist who lived in Palm Springs, California, and built his reputation for paintings and drawings of desert landscapes. 547 pages with a color frontispiece, 337 pen and ink sketches from nature; 33 full page halftone photographs; maps (one folding) and plans. The boards do show some edge wear and other mild wear. Internally stamped in two places by the old owner (1920 Dept of Engineering). Map has a small tear. Otherwise very good, clean, tight copy.
