THOMAS COOPER - PRINTED LETTER SIGNED IN INK 03/05/1818 - HFSID 3536 THOMAS COOPER He signs a printed letter addressing Dr. Dorsey as a candidate for the anatomical chair in the University of Pennsylvania, dated 1818! Printed Letter Signed in Ink: "Thomas Cooper M.D.", 1p, 8x10. No place, but Philadelphia, 1818 March 5. Hand-addressed by Cooper on verso of integral leaf to: "The honorable/Chief Justice Tighman/Chestnut Street". Begins: "Sir". In full: "As it is now known that Dr. Dorsey will be a candidate for the anatomical chair in the University of Pennsylvania, his election to that chair is rendered probable. Should that be the case, other vacancies may happen; and among others, that of the chemical department in the Medical School. In such case, I shall beg permission to be a candidate. I am aware, that this suggestion is somewhat premature, but as I understand another gentleman has already signified to many of the Trustees his intention of becoming a candidate also for the chair of chemistry in case of a vacancy, I am compelled in self defence to be thus early in announcing my intention. I hope my many public services rendered to the Science of Chemistry in this country, and my experience as a lecturer, which has already promoted me to the same chair in the Faculty of Arts, will be considered as sufficient reasons for my intended application; wherein your countenance and support will be considered as an honour by Sir, Your obedient servant". Two years after he wrote this letter, London-born THOMAS COOPER (1759-1839) became President of South Carolina College (1820-1833), now the University of South Carolina. He had previously taught at Dickson College before serving on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. The educator, political philosopher and chemist had emigrated to the U.S. in 1794, settling in Northumberland, Pennsylvania near his friend, Joseph Priestly, his partner in scientific research. Cooper, a supporter of Thomas Jefferson's opposition of the Federalists, wrote a number of political pamphlets against the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798, and was imprisoned and fined $400 under the Acts (John Adams, President at the time, called Cooper "a learned, ingenious, scientific, and talented madcap"). Cooper's other important works include Political Essays (1799), appendices to The Memoirs of Dr. Joseph Priestly (1806, two volumes), Lectures on the Elements of Political Economy (1826) and Treatise on the Law of Libel (1830), and he also edited The Statutes at Large of South Carolina (1836-1839, five volumes). Tighman was WILLIAM TIGHMAN, the Chief Judge of Pennsylvania. Docketed (unknown hand) at upper margin of address leaf. Postal marking at 2 words of handwritten address. Lightly creased with folds, horizontal fold underlines signature. Shaded at folds on verso of integral leaf. 1x1-inch hole at mid-left blank edge from opening of red wax seal, stain from seal at docket shows through to blank left margin of letter. ¾-inch separation at upper horizontal fold at blank right margin of address leaf. Upper right blank corner of that page torn away. Pinhead-size stain between 2 lines of typed text, lightly soiled at blank areas of typed page and integral leaf. Otherwise, fine condition.
