Description: A Survey of the Social and Political Economy of Belgium by John W. Thorne. Published in Le Havre, 1915. Hardcover, 118 pages. Measures about 8 1/8" x 12 1/8". This unusual work was produced during World War I. No publisher is listed; the place of publication (Le Havre) is in France, but the book is written in English. There is no preface or introduction explaining the book’s purpose. We therefore think it may have been an intelligence document from World War I, although it is not marked as such. The book contains two large fold-out maps, both of which are beautifully preserved and suitable for framing. The first shows Belgium and Luxembourg with railroads, waterways, and highways marked. It measures about 20” x 27”. The second map is rare: it shows the Belgian Congo colony in detail. This map measures about 21 3/4” x 19 7/8”. The book is in very nice condition. It is bound in 3/4 leather with marbled boards and endpapers. There is some wear to the corners of the covers and the top and bottom of the spine. The interior is clean and bright. There is a dent in the paper affecting the bottom of the title page and pages 1-20, which may have been produced in the binding process. The dent does not affect legibility — see photo of the title page —or either map. There are no bookplates, ink names, pen/pencil notations, or similar flaws. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
