Karl Bodmer was a painter, illustrator, lithographer, and etcher, originally from Zurich though he spent much of his life in France. He studied with his uncle Johann Meier and then moved to the Koblenz in Germany where he worked as a painter and engraver. In 1832 he was chosen to accompany Prince Maximilian zu Weid-Neuweid on an expedition to the American West, his role to make a visual record of the peoples, places and animals they encountered. More than 80 of his paintings were reproduced as aquatints and published in the Prince's book ' Travels in the Interior of North America'.When Bodmer returned to Europe he settled in France, becoming a member of the Brabizon school and specialising in works featuring animals and natural landscapes. He produced many of these as etching and engravings which have become very collectible. In 1877 Bodmer was awarded the Legion D'Honour for his services to art.
