Description: 16th-Plate, 1-5/8" x 1-3/8". Tintypes came out in the 1860s, but this man is wearing a high collar and cravat, a style popular in the 1840s and 1850s. His vest looks to be in a rose and leaf pattern. The man has a chin beard and under-chin beard. This seems to be a tintype, but it's different. There's a 'shinyness' to the plate. But it's not a daguerrotype as a magnet will stick to the back of this plate and there is not a mirror or negative image when the photo is shifted side to side. There's a depth to the picture that might be due to the extra thick cover glass. The mat is very different. It's a very thin piece of metal that is attached to a thick piece of white cardboard. (see the picture where the mat is standing on edge next to the laptop, you can see where the metal is.) The metal mat and the white cardboard are together like they are glued. ***This tintype or ferrotype was found together with another current listing I have of a 16th-Plate, (1-5/8" x 1-3/8"), of a child in a yellow-tinted dress or blouse with the same style of unique mat. They are part of a collection I've had for a long time. They were in a double union case that was falling apart and not salvageable. The case was the kind with wood underneath a leathery paper covering.
