Description: A tiny 2 1/2 inch tall rectangular-shaped clear-glass antique OWL DRUG CO pharmacy bottle. The label on this bottle is a color copy of the original label that went on this bottle but the bottle itself is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE Blown Glass bottle with a cork-top, dating back about a century old. Bottle embossed with a picture of a tiny owl perched on a druggists' mortar, stirring a pestle. The mortar is embossed with, "TODCO". TODCo = The Owl Drug Co. Condition: Bottle is in good solid condition. It has some spotty content residue and a trace of wear, but there is nothing specifically wrong with this bottle. We ship several times a week and your prompt payment will hasten the turn-around time. What a great looking AND rarely found TINY antique 1/2 ounce Owl Drug bottle. The design of it is hard to describe. It is mainly rectangular but when you look at the base of it, it is more diamond shaped than rectangular. It is actually an octagon shaped bottle, an 8 sided bottle, and the shape of it is somewhat like the irregular hexagon poison bottles you see that were put out by the Sun Drug Co. and Bowman's Drug Stores, to name a few and to give an idea of the actual design or shape of this bottle. The label on this bottle is a color copy of an original label that came on one of these little bottles to show that some of the tiniest OWL DRUG Co bottles contained perfume. These bottles came in ten different sizes, from this tiny 2 1/2 inch tall 1/2 ounce size HALF OUNCE -- to a large 10 inch tall 32 ounce size FULL QUART. This one is the very smallest HALF OUNCE size. The Owl Drug Co. was conceived by Richard Miller, a Canadian, who opened the first store at 1128 Market Street in 1892 downtown San Francisco. By 1906 there were at least 4 stores, the one on Market Street in S.F., one across the bay on Broadway in downtown Oakland, one built on "K" street in old Sacramento, and one on Spring Street is downtown Los Angeles. By the late 19-teens there were also stores in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington, and into the 1920's there were stores across the country, even Chicago and New York. According to labeled examples that are out there, they were also in some out of the way places; Wisconsin, Colorado, and Minnesota. As time went on the powers to be changed and the Owl Drug Co. sold out, and the Owl was absorbed by the Rexall Drug Co. Though there were still bottles with embossed owls on them made into the 1940's, possibly a little later as some of the newest Duraglass embossed examples have plastic caps, buy by the 1960's there were no more Owl Drug Co. stores. Today, about the only reminder of this one-time large drug company are some of old Rexall Stores that are still seen in the old parts of towns that still retain the old signs out front with the "OWL - REXALL" Drug Store prefix on them.
