Description: Arcadia with Prospectus Author: Stoppard, Tom; Ketcham, Diana (Intro.); Matthews, William (Illust.) Title: Arcadia with Prospectus Publication: San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2001 Edition: Limited Edition Description: Hardcover. This masterwork of contemporary English drama by the author of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1967) and Shakespeare in Love (1998) is here letterpress printed on mouldmade Zerkall paper, bound in full vivid green Japanese cloth and illustrated in four ingeniously fold-out watercolors by William Matthews, in an edition limited to 400 numbered and 26 lettered copies, this being number 100, with each copy signed by playwright Tom Stoppard and artist William Matthews. A play in Tom Stoppard's self-coined form, the "high comedies of ideas," Arcadia weaves together such subjects as Chaos Theory, Newtonian determinism, Classicism versus Romanticism, and Fermat's Last Theorem throughout a funny, heartwarming, murder-mystery cum situational comedy cum country-house play following marital disputes and stylistic debates in the history of the English garden—reflected in the landscape format of the book, itself alluding to the landscape proposals in the "Red Books" of Sir Humphrey Repton, a garden designer noted in the play's stage directions. Artist Mathew Williams' watercolor suite entitled "Four Views of Sidley Park" depicts the gardens in 1730, 1809, 1812, and 1993 lying just outside of the play's setting, Sibley Park in Derbyshire, and about which the central conflict revolves, based on descriptions in the dialogue and stage directions and informed by landscape historian Diana Ketcham, who introduces this edition, whose unique presentation, with the four illustrations folding out from the inside covers, allows the reader, all while enjoying the text itself, to view all four illustrations at once, as well as track the alterations in physical settings for the play over the 260 years it spans. Edition limited to 400 numbered and 26 lettered copies, this being number 100, with each copy signed by Tom Stoppard and William Matthews to the colophon. 11 1/4" X 14 3/8". xvi, 114pp. Bound in full green Japanese cloth, with printed paper title label to upper board and spine, in matching slipcase with cloth to edges and paper to sides. A hint of shelfwear to slipcase, with faint white scuffs to bottom edge. Some faint stray fibers to cloth, else fine. Accompanied by the publisher's prospectus for this title. This is the 62nd publication of The Arion Press. Very good +.
