These two installations by the internationally renowned artist had never before been on view in the United States. For Climaxed, the artist creates an environment that seeks to uncover and attenuate forever what happens – or how it feels – if an explosion is frozen at its most exciting moment, just as it begins. "By suspending what should happen in a split second, Oursler produces a space in which diametric opposites co-exists," according to Gary Tinterow, Engelhard Curator in Charge of the Metropolitan Museum's Department of Nineteenth-Century, Modern, and Contemporary Art. "In the same way we marvel at cinematic special effects that result from violent, fictional acts, the viewer is likely to find him- or herself simultaneously rapt and revolted, and playing the symbolic role of both voyeur and victim." Based in New York City, Tony Oursler has been a pioneering figure in new media since the 1970s. Over the last four decades, Oursler has explored popular culture through a diverse combination of multimedia projects, immersive environments, expansive outdoor installations, and dynamic dolls, ghosts, and bots that liberate video from its traditional two-dimensional format and bring it into the realm of sculpture. Often taking the human form, especially the face, as his subject, Oursler examines psychological states, the interaction between technological progress and society, and the history of science, pseudoscience, spiritualism, and religion.Since the early 90’s Oursler has become best known for his installations of makeshift puppets upon whose large heads projected video images of real faces cycle through expressions and scripted monologues. Both the modesty of his installations (which often involve found furniture, or simple cast shapes) and the austere presentation of exposed projectors give the works a disarming simplicity. Despite their obvious artifice Oursler’s creatures are shockingly real, enough to entrap the viewer’s attention and suspend disbelief of his bizarre form of reality. The artist’s research into the history of moving images, spirit images, psychological disorders and cases of multiple personality have provided inspiration for the scripted mutterings, screams and twitches that he and his actors record on video. Recent large installations have drawn from youth culture, and wireless communication.
