Los Angeles: The Theosophy Company. REPRINT EDITION. 1987 [1890/1891; 1946]. xxiv (24) + 149 pages. Large octavo (9 1/4 by 6 1/4 inch) hardcover in full black cloth, gilt front & spine, blind ruling to front. Very slight bump to bottom corners, o/w FINE CONDITION. HELENA PETROVNA BLAVATSKY challenged and deflated all Victorian stereotypes regarding the role of women when she became the first principle mover of modern occultism, setting the stage for such figures as A. E. WAITE, WILLIAM WYNN WESTCOTT & G. R. S. MEAD (both of the latter having belonged to the ‘Theosophical Society’ under her leadership), ALEISTER CROWLEY, S. L. MACGREGOR-MATHERS, and for such mystical orders as THE GOLDEN DAWN, THE O.TO., AMORC, and all their many derivatives and offshoots. H.P.B. left Europe to settle in England in the summer of 1887. That autumn she began the publication of her magazine LUCIFER, which she continued to edit till the end of her life in 1891. Shortly after the advent of LUCIFER, some of the more ardent students of Theosophy withdrew from the London Lodge and established the BLAVATSKY LODGE, which soon became the center of Theosophical activities in Britain. When the SECRET DOCTRINE was published in 1888, it aroused intense interest, and many literary, scientific and philosophical questions were raised by the students. H.P.B. was urged to reply to these questions and, yielding to the insistence of the students, she attended many of the meetings of the BLAVATSKY LODGE during the first half of 1889. The questions propounded to her covered a vast range, and her answers though given orally were stenographically recorded and afterwards revised by her for their publication in these two TRANSACTIONS, first issued as No. I in 1890 and No. II in 1891. These TRANSACTIONS contain matter of great and enduring value on the subjects treated in the SECRET DOCTRINE and for the students of Occultism for whose instruction the SECRET DOCTRINE was written. They represent a priceless commentary at first hand on some of the most abstruse and difficult problems of the Esoteric Philosophy, and extend far beyond the limits of THEOSOPHY in their scope, touching on all human pursuits of an esoteric nature.
