Description: This book is an integration of the study of trauma, divorce, and separation impacted by domestic violence, substance abuse, and mental illness. While the original research on divorce took place at roughly the same time as the field of trauma, social scientists did not integrate an understanding of trauma into their understanding of domestic violence and divorce. During divorce, such families are impacted by a history of traumatic exposure to abuse and require courtintervention that cannot be addressed by mediation or alternative dispute resolution. They require a trauma-informed interdisciplinary response. The text also discusses gender bias against women in the courts and the gender bias task force movement. Lisa Fischel Wolovick, JD, MSW, is an attorney who has represented battered women for almost thirty years. She helped to organize the first Criminal Court in New York State that specialized in domestic violence. Before becoming an attorney, she obtained her masters in social work and worked as a hospital social worker. She is currently teaching family violence and child abuse and neglect at the City University of New York, John Jay College's Graduate Program in Forensic Psychology, and has published and been a panelist in domestic violence, child custody, and trauma.
