Jonathan Safran Foer's favourite book, the Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz, is the basis of his Tree of Codes. Through cutting out sections of Schulz's text he produced a new text whose relationship to the original it is the responsibility and the pleasure of the reader to establish. There is no book quite like it - a book of absences that is nevertheless quite whole and new. It is read by inserting a sheet of paper beneath the page you are reading, vaguely reminiscent of having to cut your pages open with a paper knife in earlier times. And to look within it - a collaboration between the author and Visual Editions - is a strange and perplexing experience.
