Bentley and first published in 1913. Despite the title, it is in fact the first work in which its central character, the artist and amateur detective Philip Trent, appears: he subsequently reappeared in the novel Trent's Own Case (1936), and the short-story collection Trent Intervenes (1938). The novel is a whodunit with a place in detective fiction history because it is the first major send-up of that genre. Not only does Trent fall in love with one of the primary suspects – usually considered off-limits – he also, after painstakingly collecting all the evidence, draws all the wrong conclusions. *Amelio "Mel" Dinelli (6 October 1912, Albuquerque, New Mexico – 28 November 1991, Los Angeles, California) was an American writer for theatre, radio, film and magazines, usually in the suspense genre. In the 1940s he wrote for the CBS radio drama series Suspense, including the 1945 episode "To Find Help" which starred Frank Sinatra in one of his first dramatic roles. Dinelli later adapted the story into a play, The Man, which debuted on Broadway in 1950, and a film, Beware, My Lovely. He wrote a number of other Hollywood screenplays including The Spiral Staircase, The Window, and Fritz Lang's House by the River. STORYLINE: After a wealthy businessman is found dead, reporter Philip Trent is sent to investigate. Against the police conclusions, he suspects the assumed suicide is really a murder, and becomes highly interested in the young widow and the dead man's private secretary. *SEE MORE CLASSIC PLAYS, MUSICALS AND SCREENPLAYS FROM THIS AMAZING 150K SCRIPT ARCHIVE IN OUR OTHER AUCTIONS - AND IN THE WEEKS TO COME! *International Buyers: Please make contact if interested well before auction closes to discuss shipping options. *BID WITH CONFIDENCE AND ENJOY!
