Description: From a Richmond, VA estate, this painting of a country woman preparing vegetables has another painting on the reverse: a landscape study. These are painted in oils on a thin hardwood panel repurposed from old cabinetry. (One edge is beveled.) The interior scene is of a woman dressed in 19th century rural European style clothing. She's working over a bowl in her lap, and baskets and bowls of produce are on the floor around her. This side is varnished; the landscape side is not. Neither side is signed by the artist. The landscape captures a very windy scene with smokestacks billowing out industrial exhaust into the sky in the distance. I'd title this scene "the wind of change" as the simple country life of the 19th century was being threatened by industrialization. The antique, carved wood frame features a gilded filet (inner frame). It is in very good condition with no damage other than the slight discoloration to the gold, as shown. BOARD MEASURES: 10.25" X 12.25" FRAME measures: 13.5 x 15.5" TOTAL WEIGHT: 2 lbs.
