The result is somewhat forced, since the designers were rather strictly limited by the terms of reference. All trials, mistakes and discoveries were made on the prototypes of a multi-purpose cargo-passenger jeep. When creating the first running models of the sanitary van, it was necessary to summarize all the accumulated experience, take all the best from both the original achievements and the well-proven UAZ-452 model, realize “paper” calculations in metal and “synthesize” a new car with the given parameters.The engine on the UAZ-452 chassis, displaced almost within the wheelbase, ensured a low noise level in the transfer case and an even distribution of torque along the axes.However, the location of the power unit strictly along the longitudinal axis of the car reduced the space for the driver’s workplace. He found himself pressed close to the left door: in addition to an uncomfortable fit, this limited the view to the left. On January 1, 1977, GOST was adopted for visibility, which UAZ-452 did not meet. This discrepancy persisted to this day and forced to seek the introduction of a note in the technical regulation "0 safety wheeled vehicles." The problem of visibility and the workspace was already at the stage of development of the first landing layouts due to the displacement of the engine to the right by 70 mm. Then he had to sacrifice one centimeter. On a unified platform of the first generation, tested on the running models of the UAZ-3170 cargo-passenger jeep, the shift to the right was 60 mm. On the UAZ-3972 prototypes, this displacement had to be reduced by half - up to 30 mm. This turned out to be enough for the driver and ensured a normal landing for the front passenger, but did not solve the visibility problem: it could comply with GOST only under the condition of using a large curvature windshield, which was not allowed by the main customer.The new scheme required to transfer the radiator to the front of the car. At the same time, it became possible to efficiently heat the interior without using separate units, with heat removal from the main radiator and without the risk of engine compartment gases entering the interior. Interestingly, the forward radiator circuit was tested much earlier. In one of the periods of forced downtime by the employees of the bureau of advanced design, almost without the participation of workers in the experimental workshop, a running model was created based on the UAZ-452 with the radiator carried forward. Comparative tests of the heating efficiency of the prototype with the serial "452A" showed a significant advantage of the layout. In addition, on this sample, thanks to the transfer of the radiator to the front panel, it was possible to shift the driver's seat to the axis of the car, which significantly improved visibility. So the layout “backlog” was created for the future “carriage”.By 1990, when it came to creating running models of beskapotnikov, designers, among other power units, had a three-liter 86-horsepower (net) UMZ-421 engine. However, the four experimental machines were equipped with the "good old", and most importantly - the UMP-417 motor approved by the Ministry of Defense.These vehicles used a standard four-speed gearbox. There were innovations. The two-stage transfer case had a differential drive. The conditions of the technical specifications made it possible to equip the van with continuous axles with wheel gears of external gearing, designed and tested back in 1980 during the work on the first generation of prototypes.These bridges provided the van with 325 mm ground clearance, which allowed off-road prototypes to exhibit phenomenal cross-country ability. Both front and rear suspensions remained dependent, but the springs gave way to springs. The course of the car became smoother, which was especially important when transporting the wounded.
